One of the newest facilities for karting in the last decade is expanding. The Sumas International Motorsports Academy (SIMA) announced plans of adding to the original circuit along with developing a new paddock area for the facility in Sumas, Washington.
SIMA is the premier race track in the pacific northwest, located near the US/Canada border, owned and operated by the Valiante family. Claudio Valiante purchased a kart for his son Michael for what began as a weekend hobby and quickly developed into a lifelong passion. The Valiante family opened up Italian Motors in 1976 as a European auto repair service. Their passion for karting grew beyond just participating, adding karting to the Italian Motors operation as a karting chassis importer. The company eventually began developing and importing the Italkart brand.
In 2009, the Valiante’s purchased land in Sumas, Washington to construct the SIMA facility with ground-breaking at the beginning of 2010. The original track is 3/4-mile long, 30 feet wide with 17 technical corners that can be broken up into three different configurations (Full, East, West courses). The facility currently includes a scoring tower, member rental garages, kart storage areas and an on-site kart shop with Italian Motors USA headquarters located at the facility.
The renovation for SIMA begins with the race track, extending the current layout to 1.16 miles (1.87km), including a 630ft pit lane. A new access road will lead to a new paddock area for the facility, which will see the construction of 140 garages, 100 pit spots, RV parking, and two sets of restrooms with showers. Among the other projects include an overpass that will connect the existing paddock to the new paddock, lodging facilities for security and race officials, and eventually a karting museum.
“The project will be completed in phases,” stated SIMA and Italian Motors General Manager Claudia Carpentier. “The bulk of which is in Phase One that is scheduled to start this winter/spring. We are adding the full track expansion, the new access road, parking, a portion of the garages, paddock lighting, one new restroom with showers, temporary walkways between the paddocks, and the required utility lines for the future Phases. In the next Phases, we have planned to add up to 110 more garages, depending on customer demand, a second set of restrooms/showers in the existing paddock, and more. We have improved our karting facility each of our over ten years here, and we expect this to continue in the future as we complete the fully approved scope.”
The expected starting time for ground-breaking to the opening phase of the SIMA expansion is set for March 2021. Italian Motors USA will continued to be located in the same 20,000 square foot showroom, shop and warehouse with the existing nine buildings on site to continue to be utilized fully during and after the expansion.
“We dream big and we always have,” added Carpentier. “Our vision for both SIMA and Italian Motors is to inspire people to live passionately, to represent excellence in all that we do and to cultivate a community where people thrive.”
